Focusrite Clarett 2Pre
10 x 4, 24-bit/192kHz Thunderbolt interface with 2 “Air” enabled preamps and bundled plug-ins
Compact, 10 x 4, 24-bit/192kHz Thunderbolt interface with two high-quality preamps featuring Focusrite AIR effect, class-leading conversion, and plug-in bundle
In keeping with Focusrite’s core approach to audio, “sound is everything,” the Clarett 2Pre offers a level of sound quality, functionality, and sound-shaping tools that enable a solo artist or singer-songwriter to make a polished recording. With astonishingly low noise and wide dynamic range, the Clarett 2Pre features Focusrite’s class-leading conversion and two specially designed, ultra-transparent mic preamps with the famed “Air” effect, first appearing in Focusrite’s ISA preamps designed by Mr. Rupert Neve for George Martin’s AIR Studios (sensing a pattern here?). The Focusrite Clarett 2Pre not only makes a formidable front end for DAW recording, with an amazing 1.67ms round-trip latency, but also can serve double-duty as high-quality input channels for live performance.

INSIDE THE BOX—Focusrite Clarett 2Pre
The Clarett 2Pre audio interface provides an affordable, high-quality means to connect mics, musical instruments, line-level, and digital audio to your DAW via Thunderbolt, to and from your DAW software, and routed directly to powered monitors. The Clarett 2Pre also has connectors that let you use it as a MIDI interface. Complementing its impressive preamps, the instrument DIs of the 2Pre are also specially designed for the Clarett range, with performance specs rivaling those of some of the world’s finest dedicated DIs. When combined with the ultra-low 1.67ms latency of the 2Pre interface, you can track through amp simulations and effects plug-ins in real time—even using the hottest guitar pickups without clipping.
If you need more high-quality input channels, you can add eight additional channels of Clarett Air-enabled preamps by simply connecting an 8-channel Focusrite OctoPre to the 2Pre’s rear-panel ADAT optical input.
Specially-designed mic pres with unique “Air” effect
Beyond the microphone, the most important part of your input signal chain is the preamp. Mic pres were among the very first modules that the original Focusrite company produced thirty years ago, when master console designer, Mr. Rupert Neve, was commissioned by Sir George Martin to create a new series of console channel modules for his AIR Studios. The result was the ISA preamp/channel strip, which featured Neve’s famous “Air” setting, incorporated in the Clarett range of mic pres, which deliver an impressively low noise response of –128dB EIN. Combined with its low distortion, ultra-linear design and carefully chosen components, the Clarett 2Pre offers a clean, open, and transparent sound. But that’s just where the Clarett sound begins.
Focusrite Air effect—What sets the Clarett preamps apart from the textbook preamps found in other budget interfaces is the classic “Air” effect found in the aforementioned ISA modules. The Air setting on the Clarett mic preamp switches the impedance of the preamp to that of the original Neve-designed ISA module, producing the “transformer resonance effect,” which gives your recordings the air and clarity of an ISA transformer-based mic pre. “Air” can add some sprinkles to any vanilla-sounding microphone, but truly shines with the vintage mics that this input impedance was originally intended. There are some extra little touches to the Clarett mic pre, too – such as a special gain curve for the input level controls so they work smoothly and intuitively rather offering the conventional “all or nothing” approach.
Precision 24-bit/192kHz conversion
Designing converters isn’t just about picking a name-brand chip, it also encompasses careful circuit design and physical layout. Multi-layer boards provide internal ground-planes to reduce noise, while keeping analog and digital elements of the circuit separate will reduce the likelihood of digital clocking spikes and other noise getting into sensitive analog components. Of course component quality and selection are important considerations as well, and Focusrite does not skimp there. Clarett’s 192kHz/24-bit converters deliver up to 118dB (A/D) / 119dB (D/A) real-world dynamic range, letting you capture every nuance and subtlety in your music, whether you’re recording or mixing.
Software mixer and included plug-ins
Focusrite Control is a user-friendly, hardware workflow-based software mixer that lets you configure the Clarett 2Pre with signal routing used in the most common recording tasks. For more complex situations, it provides extensive routing and monitoring options, as well as the ability to control global hardware settings such as sample rate and synchronization. Also included with the Clarett 2Pre is an impressive sounding plug-in collection comprising Softube’s world-class Time and Tone Bundle, which includes TSAR-1R Reverb, Tube Delay, Saturation Knob, and Drawmer S73 Intelligent Master Processor. Of course, it wouldn’t make sense to leave out the legacy sound of Focusrite, which is why Clarett software also includes the Red 2 and Red 3 Plug-in Suite, which accurately model Focusrite’s classic Red range equalizer and compressor hardware, used on countless hit songs.
Note: The Addictive Keys virtual instrument from XLN Audio is included for free with all Focusrite audio interfaces. One full license per account is available for existing customers as well as new customers.
OUTSIDE THE BOX—Focusrite Clarett 2Pre
The front panel of the Clarett 2Pre has two combo XLR inputs; two switches with LED indicators for +48V phantom power; two rotary gain controls with bi-color LED “halos” to display signal level; two instrument mode indicators and two “Air” mode indicators (set from control software); clock sync LED; main monitor output level control; 1/4″ TRS headphone out with volume control; and green LED power indicator.
The Clarett 2Pre rear panel has four balanced 1/4″ line outputs, an ADAT optical input port that provides an additional eight channels of 24-bit/48kHz digital audio, Thunderbolt port, standard 5-pin MIDI in and out ports, power switch, and external DC power supply input. It also has a Kensington lock slot to prevent your Clarett 2Pre from walking away.
