INSIDE THE BOX—Dynaudio LYD 8
As we say in the studio, real engineers don’t read manuals (at least, not when anyone is watching). To make you look like a better engineer, or in actuality, to get you working quickly, LYD is designed to be a monitor anyone can use without a manual. Whether you’re just getting started in your engineering or producing career, or a seasoned pro, there’s enough to worry about without having to add “acoustician” to your resume. With LYD monitors, the task of deciphering a complicated set of controls on the back of your speakers when you just want to get busy mixing is frustrating at best (did you do it right, and how do you know?).
To optimize the LYD 8 for your listening area, simply tweak the wall-position or Sound Balance tilt-filter (for a brighter or darker sound) and you’re done. Best of all, you don’t have to crank them up to hear them at their best. LYD is designed to sound the same however loud you turn up the music
Dynaudio proprietary aluminum voice coils
It was Dynaudio who coined the phrase, “If you’re not building your own drivers, you’re in the packaging business.” This design philosophy is what made Dynaudio a leader in studio monitoring. One such innovation in speaker design is the use of pure aluminum wire for voice coils. In comparison to copper, which is much heavier and more commonly used, aluminum allows for more windings and extraordinarily large diameter coils that remain extremely light. By using aluminum instead of copper, it’s possible to double a bass driver’s coil diameter without increasing its mass. Aluminum’s thermal properties dramatically improve cooling of the voice coil. The combination light weight and powerful magnet makes cone excursion much more controlled. With the resulting high compliance of aluminum voice coils, the driver has less difficulty than copper designs to overcome inertia, providing greater transient response, dynamics, and accuracy as it tracks the audio signal from the amplifier.
Magnesium Silicate Polymer (MSP) driver membrane
The MSP driver membrane is an exclusive feature of Dynaudio loudspeakers. Used for bass and midrange drivers, it comprises a proprietary composite of magnesium silicate polymer (MSP), a material that combines low mass, high rigidity, and ideal internal damping properties. Formed in a special manufacturing process, this unique membrane maintains the piston-like action of the cone enabling smooth sound dispersion.
Vented magnet system
Dynaudio tweeters, midrange, and bass drivers feature vented chambers between the magnets and diaphragms. The Dynaudio center magnet system reduces the reflection surface behind the woofer cone, while the extremely rigid die-cast aluminum baskets are optimally shaped to reduce air turbulence and resonance. Dynaudio tweeters include a special damping chamber that deaden any back-wave energy through an acoustic absorber. The advantages include high power handling and unimpeded excursion of cones and domes.
Highly efficient, state-of-the-art Class D amplification
The LYD speaker range features an integrated Class D amplifier. A breakthrough in monitor amplification, Class D, otherwise known PCM (pulse code modulation) amplification, is far more efficient than analog amplifiers. Theoretically 100% efficient, with a real-word 90+%, Class D amps don’t require large heat sinks, making them much lighter in weight, which in turn makes them perfect for use in small monitors and bass amplifiers. Output stages such as those used in pulse generators are examples of class-D amplifiers. Properly designed class-D amplifier offers a number of benefits, including a reduction of power dissipated as heat, which in turn produces very high power conversion efficiency.
Bass extension control
Low frequencies require an exponentially larger amount of energy to reproduce than high frequencies, which is why the LYD 8’s bass extension setting affects how loud the speaker will respond. At its lowest setting (-10Hz), the low-frequency range is extended by 10Hz. This will also reduce the maximum volume that the speaker can achieve. The default setting of 0 Hz limits the range of low bass, while increasing the maximum volume of the loudspeaker. The +10 Hz setting has the least amount of bass extension but the loudest volume possible from the loudspeaker. Since most professional mixers tend to mix at relatively low volumes (~70-85 dB SPL), the greatest amount of bass extension (-10 Hz) can be used. However, as playback volume increases, you may need to reduce the amount of bass extension to prevent overdriving the loudspeaker.
Sound balance control
The LYD series monitors feature a DSP controller that lets you tailor the sound to your listening environment. The sound balance, or tilt filter affects the overall tone of the speaker. Depending on room treatment and other factors, it may be necessary to make the loudspeaker darker or brighter than the normal setting. A dead sounding room with a great deal of treatment might need a brighter setting, while a live room highly reflective surfaces may require a darker setting. Sound Balance has three settings: Bright (20Hz -1.5dB, 20kHz +1.5dB); Neutral; and Dark (20Hz +1.5dB, 20kHz -1.5 dB)
What this filter actually does is tilt the entire frequency spectrum by 1.5dB at either end using minimal phase or linear phase filters to brighten or darken the overall response. This minimal filter alters the tonality without inducing audible phase anomalies, thereby maximizing the linearity of the loudspeaker.
Speaker position optimization
If you have positioned your speakers within 19.5″ (50 cm) of the front wall, the position switch should be placed, obviously, in the “Wall” setting. This setting tames anomalies created by the wall reflections, particularly in the lower frequencies, that would combine and compromise the direct sound radiating form the drivers. If your speakers are placed further than 19.5″ (50 cm) from any wall surface, use the “Free” setting.
OUTSIDE THE BOX—Dynaudio LYD 8
To preserve power and extend the life of the monitors, the LYD series speakers have a standby mode that helps conserve energy when they are not in use. When the standby switch is set to On, the speakers remain powered until the main power switch is turned off. When set to auto, the speakers will automatically enter a power-saving mode when not in use that shuts down the amplifier section until audio is detected at the input.
The LYD 8 has a rear-panel, three-position switch that adjusts the input sensitivity for the loudspeaker. Depending on the output level of your audio mixer, interface, or monitor control system, you can choose a setting that optimizes the gain staging into the loudspeaker. The settings are: +6dB = 0dBu /.775V max; 0dB = +6dBu /1.5V max; and -6dB = +12dBu /3.1V max. If you’re using a professional interface with a maximum output of +20dBu or more, the -6dB setting is the most appropriate. If you are using equipment that runs at a consumer or domestic output level (-10dBV nominal), then the +6dB setting is better.
