Known throughout the industry for their crystal clear audio, driver stability, and near universal compatibility, RME has upped the AD/DA interface ante with the Fireface UFX+. Capable of transmitting 94 channels via MADI optical or coaxial, the FIreface UF+ plus can also communicate with your computer via Thunderbolt and USB 2.0 and 3.0. However, its connectivity doesn’t end there. There are four front-panel XLR/1/4″ combo jacks for its digitally controlled mic/instrument preamps along with eight 1/4″ line inputs for a total of 12 analog ins. Analog outs include balanced stereo XLR plus six balanced 1/4″ TRS. Digital I/O includes AES/EBU, 16 channels of ADAT, word clock, plus standard 5-pin MIDI. When you factor in RME’s improved DURec direct USB recording and TotalMix FX software, not to mention an optional ARC (Advanced Remote Control), it all leads to the unmistakable conclusion that the interface to rule all your digital gear is an RME UFX+.

INSIDE THE BOX—RME Fireface UFX+

 The connectivity of the Fireface UFX+ is as complete as it gets, with balanced analog, ADAT, MADI, AES, and SPDIF. Not stopping there, USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt connectors are standard on the Fireface UFX+. As such, it has an impressive channel count, including 12x analog, 16x ADAT, 2x AES, and 64x MADI, equaling 94 channels input and output for a total of 188. The included Thunderbolt technology gives the Fireface UFX+ the performance speed of PCI Express on both Mac and Windows, with the lowest latency, system overhead and CPU load. The Fireface UFX+ is fully Thunderbolt compatible under Windows, including hot-plugging.

Improved conversion, SNR and THD

Already known for their pristine conversion, the Fireface UFX+ features RME’s next-generation AD/DA converters, optimized analog circuits, as well as improved SNR and THD values. The result is crystal-clear and transparent audio. A new pad-less mic circuit with +18dBu maximum input and quiet, ribbon-mic friendly 75dB gain, can the most critical recording chores effortlessly. In addition, low-impedance, high-power headphone outputs (2 ohm) with a maximum +19dBu output, provide enough volume to handle loud tracking sessions.

 Comprehensive MADI connectivity

The professional way to transmit and receive audio, the MADI capabilities of the Fireface UFX+ opens the doors to a host of RME and 3rd-party digital and analog I/O solutions. With MADI, you can expand your analog channel count and route/mix in the digital domain through numerous sources. Multiple external MADI devices can also be daisy chained.

To further enhance MADI flexibility, when the Fireface UFX+ is in USB 2 mode, which is limited to 30 channels I/O (12 analog plus 16 ADAT plus AES), MADI I/O is still available via RME’s TotalMix FX. Word Clock I/O (BNC) can be switched to MADI I/O (coaxial), plus a special split mode can even support use of both optical and coaxial MADI I/O, with 32 channels on each.

Improved DURec (Direct USB Recording)

The Fireface UFX+ features RME’s second-generation DURec, direct-to-USB recording. If simplicity is the order of the day and you’d like to be able to record a live performance, for example, without complicated setups, connect a USB drive to the front-panel memory slot. With improved hardware and functionality and compatibility, DURec provides greater reliability even with slower or multi-partitioned USB thumb drives.

URec can record 12 analog inputs plus 64 MADI channels for a total of 76 simultaneous channels. An internal Realtime Clock (RTC) delivers time-stamped files. Additionally, playback includes several advanced player functions previously unavailable.

ARC USB Remote Control – Plug ’n Play Plus

The ARC USB (Advanced Remote Control) is a USB 1.1 MIDI remote control for the Fireface UFX+. A UAC 1 class-compliant device, ARC is natively compatible to Windows and Mac OS X. Once presented to the operating system, TotaIMix FX will automatically find the ARC USB and communicate with it via simple MIDI remote commands to control the UFX+. ARC has 15 freely assignable, illuminated buttons, one encoder wheel, and a TS jack for a foot switch.

TotalMix FX DSP software control

Since its inception in 2001, TotalMix provided unlimited routing and mixing for RME audio interfaces. Its unique ability to allow independent submixes for as many channels are available, made it the most flexible and powerful mixer of its kind, more than rivaling the capabilities of large format consoles. RME’s latest iteration, TotalMix FX along with supported hardware, includes a complete effects system that can be used during tracking, rendering latency-laden software solutions obsolete.

TotalMix FX can easily replace an external hardware mixer, enabling the creation of multiple latency-free monitor mixes with EQ, dynamics, reverb, and delay for any outputs, including main monitors and applying comfort effects to headphone mixes for musicians.

TotalMix FX for iPad App

TotalMix FX for iPad adds full control over hardware mixer and DSP effects for Fireface UFX+, UFX, UCX, 802, Babyface, Babyface Pro and MADIface Pro in Class Compliant Mode. It lets you create, store, and load complete mixes directly from the iPad.

The front panel of the Fireface UFX+ has four mic/instrument combi jacks, two stereo headphone outputs, three rotary encoders with push functionality, color display, MIDI input and output, USB connector for DURec, and several status LEDs. Four keys, two encoders, high-resolution and clear color display, and a well thought- out menu structure enable you to quickly change and configure the device’s settings completely without a computer.
