High-gain preamps with integrated XLR sockets

For the main RME has designed an innovative, space-saving XLR socket that integrates seamlessly into the Babyface Pro’s housing. It has both a TRS and mini-jack headphone output in parallel, each with completely separate driver stages to match low- and high- impedance headphones, guaranteeing high-fidelity sound regardless of headphone type.

Babyface Pro has two newly designed, digitally controlled preamps with individually switchable +48V phantom power. The preamps have a ribbon-mic-friendly gain of 76dB, adjustable in steps of 1dB, featuring exceptional EIN (Equivalent Input Noise) performance as well as line-overload protection. They also include a relay-driven pad.

The Babyface Pro’s prodigious set of features continues with an optical TOSLINK I/O, which can be used as either an ADAT port with SMUX support, or S/PDIF for sampling resolution up to 24-bit/192kHz. In combination with an external ADAT converter, the Babyface Pro supports 12 analog inputs as well as 12 outputs, making it ideal for both live and studio multi-track applications. You can plug any instrument, line or high-impedance, into inputs 3 and 4, and record guitar or keyboards without the need for additional hardware. MIDI I/O via an included breakout cable completes the package.

 RME’s latest AD/DA converters

For exceptional routing and mixing functionality Babyface Pro comes with RME’s TotalMix FX DSP control software, compatible with Windows and Mac OS X. An iOS version is available as well, which enables you to use an iPad as a touch control for mixing. This amazingly versatile software allows you to track with comfort effects at zero latency.

The DSP mixer uses FPGA (field-programmable gate array) technology, a user customizable integrated circuit with eight times the processing speed of ASICs (application-specific integrated circuits) commonly used in audio devices. The FPGA lets you track with near-zero latency (under 2ms), regardless of your audio software’s buffer size and without taxing your computer’s CPU. And because it acts like hardware it sounds better than code-based plug-ins. TotalMix FX adds a flexible, 3-band parametric equalizer to all inputs and outputs. Reverb and delay FX are also available.

To accommodate the needs of the most demanding audio professionals, Babyface Pro features RME’s latest generation of low-latency AD/DA converters. Along with TotalMix FX, you also get RME’s unique SteadyClock jitter suppression technology. Due to SteadyClock’s highly efficient jitter reduction, the converters operate as if they are working with internal clock all the time, guaranteeing exceptional audio.        

Getting Babyface Pro to talk to your computer is a breeze. A Class-Compliant interface, it’s natively supported by operating systems, such as Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Apple’s iPad. No proprietary drivers are required, the device will be instantly recognized.

TotalMix FX

RME’s latest iteration of TotalMix FX DSP software delivers hardware mixing and routing with loads of features and highly improved usability. Rewritten from the ground up, the DSP mixer not only matches the features of high-end digital consoles but also adds effects, such as a 3-band parametric EQ, plus low-cut filters on all input and output channels. The Babyface also provides a separate FX send bus for all inputs and software playback channels, feeding two effect engines: Reverb and Echo. Every output channel includes a FX return control for the FX output signal.

TotalMix FX for iPad adds full control over hardware mixer and DSP effects for Fireface UFX+, UFX, UCX, 802, Babyface, Babyface Pro and MADIface Pro in Class Compliant Mode. It lets you create, store, and load complete mixes directly from the iPad.


Top-panel controls

The user interface is informative and clearly laid out, with access to every feature and configuration mode of the Babyface Pro, which enables it to be used in standalone. The top of the Babyface Pro features a hi-precision rotary encoder, 6 buttons, 4 LED bands and 6 status LEDs. Its four LED bands show gain, input and output level, and the channel to be set, all dependent on the current mode. The lowest LEDs signal phantom power (+48 V, orange) and DIM, the highest one overload (clip, red). The rotary encoder is used to change various parameters directly at the unit. The 4 buttons IN, A (SET), (MIX) B and OUT directly access the respective function.
