The ADI-2 Pro is RME’s anniversary reference AD/DA converter is a plethora of devices in one elegantly simple unit. With automated features that enable you to use it right out of the box, the ADI-2 has the industry’s biggest feature to footprint ratio. Like all RME interfaces, its excellent specs are its most important features, and responsible for the crystal clear, transparent audio that typifies RME conversion. Whether you’re a mix engineer or a mastering engineer requiring the subtlest of detail and nuance in monitoring, the ADI-2 Pro offers sample rates up to 768kHz, as well as DSD record and Direct DSD playback (256/11.2 MHz). It has balanced and unbalanced analog I/O, SteadyClock III, 4-stage hardware input and output level control, DSP-based signal processing, external power supply operation, and class-compliant USB compatibility.

INSIDE THE BOX—RME ADI-2 Pro

Perfect sound capture and reproduction

RME’s quest for the utmost in reference sound quality, the ADI-2 Pro has several unique design elements. The main PCB is an extraordinary 10-layer custom design with carefully calculated conductors to prevent stray capacitance from magnetic fields as well as ample but isolated power for the phones outputs. To avoid signal degradation through the power rails, the internal power supply stages and precision regulators feature a super-low-noise design.

SoundPlus operational amplifiers

Selected SoundPlus operational amplifiers maintain highest signal-to-noise ratio, slew rate, and lowest total harmonic distortion, under all conditions. The entire analog circuit design is DC-coupled, fully symmetrical, and balanced throughout. The only capacitors in the signal path perform DC protection at the analog input sockets, and have been carefully selected to avoid any sonic impact.

Supports a 32-bit/786kHz sample rate

The ADI-2 Pro’s 4-channel AD-converter supports a 32-bit/786kHz sample rate and DSD recording, is configured in a dual mono design, with a signal to noise ratio improved by 3dB. Two premium DACs are used for separate stereo outputs. Internal audio processing, such as EQ, cross-feed, and spectral analysis, is done via high-performance DSP with 2.17 Gigaflops (2882 MIPS), delivering enough computing power to work at the 768kHz sample rate.

High-quality sample-rate converter

For ease of operation, the ADI-2 has a built-in, high-quality sample-rate converter switchable to the AES or SPDIF input, to resolve any clocking issues. Additionally, RME’s latest SteadyClock III technology ensures perfect jitter reduction and stable clocking, whether internal or external clocks are used.

High-resolution display

The ADI-2 Pro has a number of unique features, not found on comparable devices, such as a 5-band parametric EQ for fully individual headphone compensation and adjustable bass/treble controls with easy access. It also has a binaural cross-feed function, adjustable loudness filter, selectable AD/DA filters, four discrete I/O reference levels, auto reference level setting, auto balanced phones mode, and much more. The display is not only used to control the ADI-2 Pro, it also displays warning and help messages.

For mastering, theADI-2 has processing features, such as M/S Processing, stereo width, phase reversal, plus storage and recall of all settings. It also features RME’s famous Spectral Analyzer, a 30-band bi-quad filtered analysis tool that provides unprecedented musical visualization, perfectly complementing the high-resolution IPS display.

Extreme-power headphone outputs

For referencing final mixes and masters in headphones, RME engineers designed a new headphone output stage that harnesses the full performance of its premium DACs to the phone jack—even with low-impedance headphones. The Extreme Power design features an impressive 0.1-ohm output impedance, +22dBu maximum output level, and a maximum output power of 1.5 watts per channel. Each stereo headphone output delivers the same 120dBA SNR performance as the line outputs, for hum- and noise-free listening. Even at full power, THD is far below -100dB (0.001%) for the clearest and most detailed soundstage possible. The Extreme Power design also incorporates current limiting, power monitoring, overload detection, and DC protection. Low-power and high-power modes are provided, making the ADI-2 Pro a perfect match for anything from in-ear monitors (IEM) to planar-magnetic headphones (a quasi-ribbon diaphragm).

The ADI-2 Pro, features an Advanced Balanced mode via its two headphone outputs, which delivers a balanced signal path from the DAC straight to the headphones with a 3dB gain in signal-to-noise ratio. It also smoothens deviations in components and optimizes frequency response. Advanced Balanced mode has super low output impedance (0.2 Ohms), and a maximum output level of +28dBu.

Front panel controls and I/O

The front panel of the ADI-2 Pro has two 1/4″ TRS headphone jacks, three high-precision rotary encoders with push function, 4 buttons, a standby power button, and a high-resolution IPS display.

The ADI-2 Pro includes two servo-balanced analog inputs on XLR/TRS combo jacks, two separate balanced and unbalanced outputs on XLR and TS, two stereo Extreme Power headphone outputs on the front, an optical SPDIF I/O that also understands ADAT, and coaxial SPDIF (RCA) and AES I/O (XLR) via an included breakout cable. This universal set of I/O options offers superior quality and flexible connectivity to those who take a no-compromise approach to audio.

The USB 2.0 port is fully Class Compliant (UAC 2) for connection with compatible iOS devices, and is also used for firmware updates. Including an external switched power supply with lockable connector, the ADI-2 Pro can be battery powered for mobile applications as well as galvanically isolated use.

As a computer interface the ADI-2 Pro offers a stereo (2 in/2 out) and a multi-channel mode (6 in/8 out). Compatibility with Mac OS X comes right out of the box. Under Windows the ADI-2 Pro uses RME’s MADIface series driver for full WDM and ASIO compatibility and highest performance.
