Description

The PreSonus Quantum 2 is a cascadable, 24-bit/182kHz audio interface with 22 inputs, 24 outputs, four XMAX preamps, Thunderbolt 2 and ADAT optical I/O, and comes with award-winning Studio One DAW software

Normally, things are pretty laid back in in Baton Rouge, but like its indigenous Cajun food and sub-tropical climate, PreSonus decided to bring the heat with a side order of speed in the Quantum 2 audio/MIDI interface. Taking advantage of high-speed Thunderbolt 2 connectivity and ADAT optical I/O, the desktop PreSonus Quantum 2 beckons you to track with two recallable XMAX preamps and up to 22 inputs, with superb audio quality at 24-bit/192kHz resolution. But don’t let its small size mislead you in any way; the cascadable Quantum 2 can grow to accommodate 80 inputs and outputs, should the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra or Louisiana Cajun-Zydeco Festival stop by your bedroom studio for some recording and a fais do-do (party with dancing). Naturally, in true Cajun spirit, the Quatum 2 comes with a lagniappe (Cajun for “unexpected gift or bonus”) is in the form of PreSonus’ award-winning Studio One DAW software

PreSonus Quantum 2 audio/MIDI interface in one take:

  • 22×24 Thunderbolt 2 ultra-low-latency audio interface
  • PreSonus’ fastest interface; record direct to DAW (no DSP)
  • Stack up to four Quantum interfaces via Thunderbolt for a monster system
  • Assignable output level control
  • 6 8-segment LED meters (4 input, 2 output)
  • Tight integration with included Studio One Artist DAW software (Mac/Windows) for multi-track music production and studio command features
  • Wireless control of preamp levels from free UC Surface touch-control software (Mac/Windows/iPad/Android) and from free Studio One Remote for iPad
  • Compatible with most recording software for Mac and Windows

INSIDE THE BOX—PreSonus Quantum 2

Getting up to speed

When it came to designing the Quantum 2, much like Maverick and Goose, PreSonus engineers felt the need for speed. It starts with high-speed Thunderbolt 2 connectivity and a no-frills, direct-to-DAW architecture; no DSP speed bumps. The result is PreSonus’ leanest, fastest, lowest-latency interface to date. For the clean, clear audio quality PreSonus is famous for, they outfitted the Quantum 2 with cutting-edge 24-bit/192kHz converters with 120dB dynamic range and a surprising amount of expandability and software control options.

Expandable up to 80 inputs and outputs

The Quantum 2 offers two combo mic/instrument inputs and two combo mic/line inputs, each with a digitally-controlled XMAX preamp with individual +48V phantom power. It also has four balanced 1/4″ (TRS) DC-coupled outputs which can provide voltage control for external analog gear. Up to 18 digital inputs and outputs are possible via ADAT Optical I/O and S/PDIF stereo digital I/O. For monitoring, the Quantum 2 has a headphone output with dedicated volume control. And if you need more channels, you can stack up to four Quantum 2 interfaces via Thunderbolt to create a mega system with up to 80×80 I/O.

The Quantum 2’s ADAT I/O lets you add any ADAT-compatible A/D/A converter, such as the PreSonus DigiMax DP88 preamp/converter, which seamlessly extends the analog I/O on the Quantum 2 with eight digitally controlled XMAX preamps, and word clock I/O. The DP88’s mic preamps are fully remote-controllable from UC Surface, Studio One, and Studio One Remote when connected via ADAT Lightpipe to the Quantum 2. To make sure your digital gear plays nicely together, BNC word clock I/O ensures tight sync. And of course the Quantum 2 has MIDI I/O as well.

Audiophile-grade conversion and high-headroom, recallable XMAX preamps

The Quantum 2 features audiophile-quality converters, low-jitter clocking, and can operate at up to 192kHz for ultra-high-definition mixing and recording. These high-quality converters are on every input and output providing 120dB dynamic range to capture complex musical harmonics smoothly and naturally with no audible distortion. And PreSonus’ XMAX Class A analog microphone preamps deliver incredibly high headroom, deep lows, smooth highs, and a rich overall sound, capturing the minutest detail in your music. Plus, software-recallable settings make it easy to pick up right where you left off.

XMAX preamplifiers feature three key elements:

  • XMAX’ Class A circuits have no crossover distortion and deliver more pure, clearer, and more musical results than the Class AB designs
  • The XMAX preamplifier runs on 30V power rails. Most off-the-shelf, op-amp-based designs run on power rails of 10V to 18V. Higher-voltage power rails deliver more headroom, deeper lows, smoother highs, and a richer overall sound
  • Discrete components—not op-amps. Only genuine transistors, resistors, and capacitors comprise XMAX preamps. Op-amps add noise, coloration, and harshness to a signal. PreSonus’ discrete design delivers ultra-low noise and transparency

Seamless integration with Studio One DAW software

An excellent companion for any DAW software, Quantum 2 becomes a fully integrated extension of your recording environment with Studio One Artist, providing you with a complete recording solution. Launch Studio One, and you’ll find full preamp control integrated into your system. Need to track remotely? Launch Studio One Remote on your iPad.
