The Volca Keys is a great way for beginners and the experienced to get their synth on with a simple-yet-powerful 3-voice analog synthesizer and loop sequencer

The Volca Keys is a modern descendant of Korg’s long line of renowned analog synthesizers. A 27-key lead synthesizer that is capable of generating huge sounds far beyond what its diminutive size might suggest, the Korg Volca Keys begins with a filter section featuring the circuitry of the legendary miniKORG700S (1974). With a straightforward design that includes three voltage controlled oscillators, a voltage-controlled filter, voltage-controlled amplifier, low-frequency oscillator, and envelope generator—the basic foundation of analog synthesis—plus a delay effect and a sequencer, it’s an excellent choice for those getting started in analog synthesis. The Volca Keys offers richly expressive sounds and simple yet deep sound-creation capabilities. Beyond that, the Korg Volca Keys is just plain fun.

Korg Volca Keys in one take:

  • Simple three-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer
  • Voicing function lets anyone create sounds easily
  • Delay effect for even more sonic possibilities
  • Loop sequencer lets you record phrases and knob movements, skip steps, and more
  • Convenient performance functions for greater ease of use

Simple three-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer

With its complement of three VCOs, 1VCF, 1VCA, 1LFO, and 1EG, the Volca Keys has the familiar components of analog synthesis. The Volca Keys ability to generate diverse and powerful sounds with just a few carefully selected parameters is a hallmark of analog synthesis. The sonic possibilities of the Volca Keys are only limited by your imagination. You can use the three oscillators to play chords; in unison with detune to produce solid lead lines; or apply ring modulation to create exotic metallic sounds. Since the Volca Keys comprises the basic components of analog synthesis, it’s also an ideal beginner’s instrument for learning sound design.

Voicing function lets you create sounds easily

The Volca Keys features a Voicing function that makes it easy to select the ways its three oscillators can be combined. Simply turn the knob to choose one of six combinations: Poly, Unison, Octave, Fifth, Unison Ring, or Poly Ring. Without complicating the Volca’s straightforward design, this feature makes it easy to obtain a wide variety of sounds with a simple turn of a knob.

Delay effect for even more sonic possibilities

For creating the lush atmospheric sounds and spacey leads that analog is famous for, the Volca Keys has a delay effect that also reproduces the pitch change that occurs when you change the delay time on an analog tape echo unit.

Versatile loop sequencer

Since half the fun of analog synthesizers is having a sequencer to play with, the Volca Keys has a loop sequencer with up to 16 steps, allowing you to record your performance on the touch panel keyboard while you play. You can also use overdub recording to produce complex loops that could not be played individually. The Volca Keys Motion Sequence function also lets you record knob movements, applying time-varying changes to your sound to enhance your loops and add originality to your live performances.

To further enhance your sequencing, the Volca Keys has an Active Step that lets you skip a step during sequence playback. It can create effects similar to a short loop, or unexpected syncopated rhythms, allowing dynamic performances just as though you were performing the sequence live. In addition, the Volca Keys sequencer has a Flex function that lets you play the phrase without quantization, to give your loops a live-feeling groove. Up to eight sequence patterns can be stored in internal memory.

Convenient performance functions

Self-tuning function

Pitch-drift from oscillators has long been a problem associated with analog synthesizers, caused by changes in temperature or simply the passage of time. The Volca Keys solves this issue by providing a elf-tuning function that constantly tunes the oscillators. You’ll never need to tune during a performance, or wait for the pitch to stabilize after turning the power on.

Other performance features of the Volca Keys include a sync jack for synchronized playback with multiple Volcas or a monotribe. The MIDI In connector also lets you synchronize with other devices, as well as play the Volca from a MIDI keyboard. You can also send note messages from your DAW and use the Volca Keys as an analog sound module.

You can also use the “SyncKontrol” iPhone app to wirelessly control tap tempo, swing settings, and synchronized playback with iOS music apps via Korg’s WIST (Wireless Sync-Start Technology).

Battery-powered operation and built-in speaker

With its compact size, battery operation, and built-in speaker, it’s easy to take the Volca Keys anywhere. It can sit on a small DJ coffin while creating huge sounds. Or you can ascend to a mountain peak, view the firmament, and serenade the local villagers with Volca Keys pads, leads, and sequences.
