INSIDE THE BOX— Korg Volca Beats
Modern versions of Korg’s classic synths
Korg’s Volca series comprises three synthesizers designed for EDM production; the Volca Keys lead synthesizer, the volca Bass synthesizer, and the Volca Beats rhythm machine. These synths are descendants of Korg’s famous monotron, monotribe, and MS-20 Mini analog synthesizer. Powerful and fun-to-use, the Volca series are true-analog devices designed to deliver a diverse array of rich sounds that can only be had via analog synthesis. Each synthesizer in the Volca series is equipped with sequencing/recording capabilities for intuitively generating performances.
Multiple Volcas can be used in tandem via the vintage-style sync in/out, with DAW software, or MIDI keyboard via MIDI In. Battery operation and built-in speakers mean that you can play anytime, anywhere. Far more sophisticated than their forebears, the Volca series gives you a complete analog mini-studio that can fit in a backpack.
Powerful analog drum sounds
The Korg Volca Beats features a combination of punchy analog sounds inspired by the classic drum machines, plus PCM digital sounds. The sounds in the Volca Beats are not only indispensable for EDM, R&B, rap, and hip-hop, Korg took the opportunity to add some powerful new sounds that can only be produced in the analog realm. Analog drums include kick, snare, high- and low-pitched toms, closed hi-hat, and open hi-hat. The PCM engine covers sounds where digital samples reign supreme, including, claps, claves, agogo, and crash cymbals. The PCM engine reproduces the edgy lo-fi sound of the ’80s. Plus, you can also create even more distinctive sounds by changing the PCM Speed to dramatically raise or lower pitch.
Streamlined controls for maximum creativity
Creativity is spontaneous process that comes from the right brain hemisphere, whereas mechanical functions, such as scrolling through menus, come from the left brain. To foster spontaneity and creativity, Volca Beats has a carefully selected set of streamlined controls that let you quickly create the drum sound you want. For example, simply by using the three knobs Click, Pitch, and Decay, you can create an incredible variety of kick sounds, ranging from edgy sounds that dominate the low range, to tight sounds that keep a precise beat.
Regardless of the settings, all of these sounds will have great presence and density, and will deliver the convincing power that’s possible only from an analog sound generator.
Step sequencer from the Korg Electribe
The Volca Beats step sequencer takes its functional cues from the acclaimed Korg Electribe. It’s designed to make editing easy, letting you add or remove parts in an improvisational fashion. You can use its 16 step keys to intuitively enter notes into a sequence while visually referencing the position of the notes within the measure. You can also play the touch-panel keyboard to record in real time. You can store up to eight sequence patterns in the Volca’s internal memory.
Stutter and Active Step function
Rather than spend several hours doing BT-style stutter edits, the Volca Beats does it in real time. It can dramatically expand your live performance possibilities by adding drum rolls or delay-like effects. The stutter effect can be used to completely transform the feel of an entire pattern, or as a fill when transitioning between patterns. Stutter knob movements can also be recorded in a sequence.
The Korg Volca beats also has Active Step, and Step Jump functions that can generate new beats by inserting or removing steps. Active Step lets you skip a step during sequence playback; the Step Jump function instantly plays only the step you’re pressing. It can create effects similar to a short loop, or unexpectedly irregular rhythms, allowing dynamic performances, as if you were performing the sequence itself.
OUTSIDE THE BOX—Korg Volca Beats
Volca Beats top panel controls
All of the controls and I/O of the Volca beats are on its top panel, including its 16-step multi-touch trigger pad for inserting beats. Each of its six analog drum sounds (divided into four sections: Kick, Snare, Tom, Hat) has three rotary controls that are optimized to contour the unique characteristics of each instrument sound. The stutter function has two rotary controls for time and depth, plus a BPM counter underneath them. Along with transport controls, the Volca has soft buttons for memory, step mode, part scrolling, mute, FUNC select for buttons with dual functions, active step, and record. There are also mini knobs for PCM speed, tempo, part level, power button, and volume.
The top panel I/O includes a standard MIDI input connector, two mini-jacks (1/8″) for sync in and sync out, stereo headphone mini-jack, and DC power supply connector. Sync jack and MIDI In connectors allow synchronized performances with multiple Voclas, a monotribe, with your DAW. The MIDI IN connector lets you synchronize with other devices as well as play the volca from your MIDI keyboard.
You can also use the “SyncKontrol” iPhone app to wirelessly control tap tempo, swing settings, and synchronized playback with iOS music apps via WIST (Wireless Sync-Start Technology).
With its compact size, battery operation, and built-in speaker, it’s easy to take the Volca anywhere and perform whenever the muse strikes. For more information, call or chat with your Westlake Pro sales consultant today.
