The Korg Krome 73 sets the bang-for-the-buck standard when it comes to keyboard workstation features, sound sets, and affordability for the working musician

The Korg Krome offers working keyboardists a serious value in top-quality keyboard and drum sounds, sequencing, backing grooves, touch-screen control, and effects. Among its carefully chosen sounds, it features eight-level, multi-sample grand and electric pianos for the utmost in expressivity. The keyboard samples are full-length (un-looped), and include the resonances associated with the hardware performance of the instruments they emulate. Even the drum sounds have mixable room ambience for greater realism, and play back in authentic grooves at the touch of a button. The Krome also includes built-in effects, dual polyphonic arpeggiators, 16-track sequencer, and 600 performance patterns. With touchscreen control, USB port, and an SD card slot for data storage, the Korg Krome offers even deeper levels of control via editor software compatible with Mac and PC. The Krome is available in 61- and 73-key models, with semi-weighted natural-touch keyboards, and an 88-key version with Korg’s Natural Weighted Hammer Action keyboard.

Realistic multi-sample grand piano

It was once predicted that the synthesizer would do to the piano, what the piano did to the harpsichord in terms of obsolescence, but it never replaced the piano sound itself, which remains an essential component of every keyboard instrument. The Krome has inherited the impressive “German D Grand” that was created for the Korg’s flagship Kronos workstation. Each of the 88 keys contains eight layers of full-length, un-looped stereo samples, complemented by authentic damper resonance. This resonant, authentic, and realistic piano is a major increase in quality for this class of keyboard.

Expressive electric pianos

The electric piano is just as much an essential part of contemporary music as the acoustic piano sound. The Krome’s three types of electric pianos also employ eight velocity levels to ensure faithful reproduction of classic EPs, and expressive response. To ensure authenticity, including the vintage amps, cabinets, and classic effects critical to these timeless sounds, the Krome’s electric pianos contain more sample data than the entire sound memory of most PCM synthesizers. To say that these samples are rewarding and a joy to play is an understatement.

Studio-quality drum sounds

As much as we keyboardists like to think our contributions to contemporary music are critical, we have to admit that drums are the foundation of rock and pop music. In keeping with the authenticity of its piano sounds, the Krome’s built-in drums, also backed by high-capacity PCM, include both direct drum sound and room ambience, which is where the resonance and richness of drum sounds reside. With the same “Jazz Ambience Drums” found on the Korg Kronos, the Krome enables you to mix both direct and ambient sound for studio-quality backing drum grooves.

Colorful sound palette

Taking its name from the Greek word for color, Krome, has a broad array of sounds in addition to piano, electric piano, and drums, to cover a wide variety of genres. The Krome has 640 programs and 288 combinations, each meticulously created by professional studio and performing musicians. Additionally, you can tweak, customize, create, and save your own sounds as well. The Krome also has 600 preset drum patterns accessible at the press of a single button. With plenty of user storage space, drum patterns can be created and used with the sequencer for both practice and live performance.

Dual polyphonic arpeggiators

The Krome has dual arpeggiators that can run simultaneously In Combination mode or Sequencer mode. This enables the Krome to generate guitar and bass lines, drum patterns, or for sound design, in addition to standard arpeggio patterns. You can use them to create pads, synth sounds, and sound effects that include subtle motion. Arpeggiator patterns can be edited and stored.

16-track sequencer

Among the features you would expect in a quality workstation, Krome has a 16-track sequencer and a full suite of tools for music creation. To capture you ideas as the muse strikes, the Auto Song Setup function lets you record immediately simply by pressing the REC button while you’re playing a program or combination. Each Template Song assigns appropriate sounds to sequencer tracks with pre-routed effects to match a specific musical genre. Korg’s Cue List gives you arrangements in lightning speed, plus you can and build a repertoire of instant-access patterns using the RPPR (Realtime Pattern/Play Recording) feature. MIDI-style piano-roll editing enables you to analyze and refine your improvisations into solid arrangements.

 Korg quality effects

The Krome effects section has five Inserts, two master effects, and one “total” effect. Its 193 effects include modulation effects, such as chorus, flangers, phasers, delays, reverbs, plus dynamics processors including compressor and limiter. There are also more esoteric-sound sounding effects, such as the Grain Shifter and Talking Modulator, as well as amp modeling and speaker simulation effects using Korg’s proprietary “REMS” modeling technology.

Krome 61-, 73-, and 88-key models

Krome 61 and 73 models feature a semi-weighted natural-touch keyboard, that can accommodate any style of piano, and really comes into its own on organ performance and synth solos. For the more pianistic among us, the Krome 88 has a full 88 keys and is equipped with Korg’s NH (Natural Weighted Hammer Action) keyboard that captures every nuance of your playing dynamics expressively, particularly on acoustic piano or electric piano presets.

Distinctive design

Krome features an elegantly curved profile. Its top control panel comprises two aluminum panels of differing design, resulting in a distinctive appearance that projects an unmistakable presence, even on a cluttered stage. In both looks and sound, Krome makes a powerful statement onstage.

TouchView Color display

Krome’s huge 800 x 480 pixel TouchView Color display ensures excellent visibility and can display several parameters at once. Simply touch the screen to change sounds or edit parameters. Finger-drag editing is also supported, allowing you to use the on-screen sliders and knobs directly. Numerous functions take advantage of the TouchView interface, such as the piano roll editor, a stopwatch that’s convenient for keeping track of a live performance, and a calculator keypad that is convenient for entering numerical values.

USB and SD Storage

You can connect Krome to your computer via USB to easily transfer MIDI data. You can also use an SD card (commercially available) to manage the Krome’s data files.

Plug-In Editor

The Krome Editor and Krome Plug-In Editor allow you to edit your Krome from your computer while viewing large numbers of parameters simultaneously, or to use Krome in your DAW as if it were a software synthesizer.

Krome is a powerful performance and music workstation that offers a great value to the working musician. For more information, call or chat online with your Westlake Pro sales consultant today.
