JBL’s 7-Series 705i is purpose-built from design to final form to answer the needs for multichannel monitoring in video post-production and broadcast facilities, as well as mobile studios. Featuring JBL’s next-generation Super Driver and an ultra wide bandwidth high-frequency transducer that delivers a linear response beyond 40kHz, the JBL 705i provides accuracy and detail that meets the demands of complex post-production mixes, as well as the clarity and quality needed for broadcast. With compact enclosures designed for ease of installation, the 705i studio monitors offer an elegant and scalable system for broadcast and post facilities working in immersive audio formats. The JBL 705i inherits much of its cutting-edge technology from JBL’s M2 audiophile-quality master reference speaker; the HiQnet-enabled 705i is centrally tuned and amplified*, thus eliminating the need for local power sources, and can be controlled via software, hardware, or wireless tablet.

Image Control Waveguide
A product of JBL’s impressive audio legacy and their cutting-edge advances in studio monitor design, the 705i incorporates design features from JBL’s high-end M2 master reference monitor, in particular, the image control waveguide. This technology provides seamless crossover and uncolored response in the critical dialog range, which is essential to video post. The waveguide precisely controls sound emanating from the speaker horizontally and vertically, ensuring the sound arriving at the listening position is neutral and accurate. The 705i’s neutral off-axis response allows for greater accuracy, room-to-room consistency, highly detailed imaging, and a coherent transition between screen channels, surrounds and overhead speakers.
Next-Generation driver technology
It’s said that if manufacturers aren’t designing and building their own drivers, they’re simply in the business of putting speakers in boxes. Well nothing could be further from the truth with JBL, who have been innovating speaker design since the company was formed in 1946. Seventy years later, JBL is still pioneering speaker design with their next-generation “Super Driver.” To accommodate the dynamic range and extended frequency response requirements of today’s production formats, JBL’s 2409H high-frequency transducer incorporates an innovative low-mass annular diaphragm that delivers smooth response beyond 40kHz, with extraordinary output and very low distortion. One advantage of a linear frequency response well past the range of human hearing is reducing phase shifts in the audible range, which in turn provides greater realism, detail, and precise spatial cues.
JBL-developed custom low-frequency transducers
The exceptional performance and low-frequency response of the JBL 705i in the 30Hz range is due to the custom 725G 5″ high-excursion, low-frequency driver. The 725G delivers continuously high output thanks to its minimal power compression. JBL has gone to great lengths to reduce the effects of power compression, which is a result of DC resistance as copper or aluminum voice coils increase in temperature. As voice-coil resistance increases, less power is transferred from the amplifier. As a result, the speaker will not play as loud as it gets warmer. Some speakers may experience 3db – 6dB of power compression, which means that the effect of power compression is like removing half your sound system.
Modular, scalable, central amplification and signal processing control
To accommodate the size and needs of post and broadcast facilities as well as mobile control rooms, the 7-Series studio monitors including the SLR70i and LSR708i are modular designs for scalability depending on the number of channels required and room size. 7-Series monitors can also be combined with JBL’s flagship M2 Master Reference Monitor to produce a wide range of systems. For example, used as screen channels, the M2 integrates perfectly into system with JBL cinema surrounds, subwoofers, and overhead surround speakers specified in burgeoning theatrical release formats.
BSS BLU link networked audio
Centralized amplification and processing via Crown DCi8300N power amps eliminate the requirement for power source at each speaker location. Leveraging Crown 8-channel amplification provides a number of benefits, including reduced speaker size and weight; system streamlining via Blue link networked audio, which simplifies installation and reduces noise; onboard DSP provides perfectly matched tuning profiles for the 705i and 708i; and dedicated room EQ filters provide a more consistent listening experience in a variety of post production and broadcast rooms.
The 708i and 705i can be powered using a single amplifier channel or bi-amplified using separate amplifier channels for the low frequency and high frequency drivers. The 7-Series speakers are supplied with “phoenix” type Euro-block wiring plugs installed.
The addition of a BSS Soundweb London processor adds system capabilities, including down-mix monitoring in a range of configurations, flexible I/O options, such as AES/EBU, Dante networking, AVB Audio Video Bridging) Ethernet, and analog with line or mic inputs. Thanks to the 705i’s Harman HiQnet-equipped components, session functions, such as level, individual speaker solo, and more can be centrally controlled via hardware controller, Harmon Audio Architect software, or wireless tablet.
For large system configurations, BSS Soundweb London signal processors provide centralized processing of multiple M2/7-Series systems and are controlled using supplied London Architect software. Select models in the BSS Soundweb London processor line can be fitted with digital inputs and externally synchronized to house word-clock for an all-digital signal path. Centralized management of EQ presets allows storage and easy recall of curves such as the X-Curve for specialized applications.
JBL included only the essential components in the 705i. By centralizing amplification and signal processing, along with the advantages of Crown amplification’s superb performance, the reduced weight of these compact enclosures and flexible mounting hardware allow versatile mounting options and unobstructed sight lines. As an added bonus of central control, the cost of supplying electric power at each speaker location is eliminated.
