Description

The Genelec 1032B is a 180/120W bi-amplified monitor with a 10″ woofer and 1″ metal dome tweeter with directivity control waveguide, room compensation, and auto-sensing sleep mode

Nothing said, “world-class studio” like the Genelec 1032A midfield monitor when it was first introduced. The 1032B continues that tradition, remaining a benchmark for the pro audio industry. A powerful, magnetically shielded, 10″ two-way monitor with a linear dynamic range that can handle the most demanding studio chores, the 1032B is a precision tool that outputs 110dB SPL with astounding accuracy, both on- and off-axis. In order to deliver superior imaging and consistency throughout the stereo field, Genelec developed their proprietary Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW) to tailor the horizontal and vertical radiation of the speaker’s output. Not only easy on the ears, the Genelec 1032B is easy on your electric bill as well (something studio owners are all-too familiar with). To save money and prolong speaker life, Genelec’s Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) circuitry that puts the 1032B into a power-saving sleep mode when no audio input is detected. Built for all aspects of the studio business with an industry-leading feature-set, the 1032B is a monitor for audio professionals working at the highest levels of the industry who demand uncompromising audio reference.

INSIDE THE BOX—Genelec 1032B

Genelec-designed drivers

Known for their proprietary driver technology, the low frequencies of the 1032B are reproduced by a 10″ (250 mm) bass driver loaded in a 24-liter vented cabinet. Low-frequency response is linear down 40Hz where -3dB rolloff begins, with extension down to 36Hz (-6dB). The high-frequency driver is a 1″ (25 mm) metal dome that maintains pure piston behavior up to 23 kHz. The uniform dispersion control is achieved with the revolutionary DCW Technology pioneered by Genelec. The DCW also provides perfect phase and delay uniformity at the crossover frequency. Both drivers are magnetically shielded.

Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW)

Genelec’s DCW technology, developed and refined over 30-plus years, significantly improves the performance of direct-radiating multi-amped monitors. The Directivity Controlled Waveguide shapes the radiated wavefront in a predictable dispersion pattern resulting in a very linear overall frequency range and uniform power response. Minimized early reflections provide a wide and consistent listening area with accurate on- and off-axis sound reproduction.

Another important advantage of a controlled wave front is that the frequency balance of the room’s reverberation field is essentially the same as the direct field from the monitors. As a consequence, the monitoring system’s performance is less dependent on the room’s acoustic characteristics.

Sound image width and depth, critical components in any listening environment, are important not only for on-axis listening, but also off-axis. This benefits both the engineer and clients outside the sweet spot, particularly in large control rooms.

DCW Technology key benefits:

  • Flat on- and off-axis response for wider usable listening area
  • Increased direct-to-reflected sound ratio for reduced control room coloration
  • Improved stereo and sound stage imaging
  • Increased drive unit sensitivity up to 6dB
  • Increased system maximum sound pressure level capacity
  • Decreased drive unit distortion
  • Reduced cabinet edge diffraction
  • Reduced complete system distortion

 Overload protection circuitry

Maintaining reliable performance in the studio is essential, which is why Genelec builds protection circuitry into the 1032B. With signal level detection, it prevents driver failure by reducing signal level automatically in case of sudden peaks or constant high levels.

Overload protection circuitry features and benefits:

  • Reduces the output level when required, (e.g. when driver voice coil temperature reaches the safe limit) which significantly improves system reliability
  • Protection circuitry specifically optimized to each loudspeaker and subwoofer enables maximum system output levels

Room response EQ controls

Three tone control switches enable the response of the system to be adjusted to match the acoustic environment. The adjustments are Treble Tilt, Bass Tilt, and Bass Roll-off, located on the rear panel. The factory settings for these controls are ‘All Off’ to provide an anechoic response.

 Active crossovers

Active monitors, as opposed to powered monitors, use active crossovers, which electronically splits the audio into separate frequency bands. These bands in turn can routed to individual power amplifiers, which drive transducers optimized for each frequency band.

The 1032B has an active crossover network that consists of two parallel band-pass filters. The filters are acoustically complementary with slopes of 24dB/octave, with a crossover frequency of 1.8kHz. Using the active approach enables frequency response adjustments and optimization of the full loudspeaker system, placed in various room environments, without expensive external equalizers. The end result is a simpler, more reliable, efficient, consistent and precise active loudspeaker system.

Optimized amplifiers

The active design offers several benefits. By connecting power amps directly to the drivers, damping control on the driver’s voice coil is maximized, reducing unwanted changes in the driver’s electrical characteristics, which can improve transient response. Active technology can produce superior sound output vs. size vs. low-frequency cut-off performance.

The amplifier of the 1032B is rear-mounted to the speaker enclosure on quick-release vibration isolators, which ensure rattle-free operation and long-term reliability. The bass and treble amplifier output 180W and 120W respectively of short-term power. With a fast slew rate and low distortion, the amplifiers are capable of driving a stereo system to peak output levels in excess of 124dB SPL at 1 meter (3 feet). The unit incorporates special protection circuitry for driver overload protection and thermal overload protection. Variable input sensitivity allows for accurate level matching to the console output section.

Intelligent Signal-Sensing technology (ISS)

The 1032B is equipped with an energy-saving, speaker-life prolonging, Intelligent Signal Sensing (ISS) Auto-start function. ISS automatically turns the amplifier to standby mode if an input signal isn’t detected for approximately one hour, and back on when signal returns. The power consumption in standby mode is typically less than 0.5 watts. Triggering sensitivity can be selected with the ISS Sensitivity switch.

As famous as many of the studios in which it can be found, the Genelec 1032B is the definitive choice for truly professional, mid-sized production environments.
