Description

8-channel remote-controlled mic pre and analog to digital interface for Dante networks with dual switching network connectors and power supplies for guaranteed operation in critical live applications

The Focusrite RedNet MP8R is designed to be an ultra high-quality front end for Dante audio-over-IP networks. An 8-channel remote-controlled microphone preamplifier and A/D converter designed specifically for critical applications where uninterrupted operation is paramount, such as live sound/recording and broadcast, the RedNet MP8R features dual redundant Ethernet connectors and power supplies that seamlessly switch in the event of failure. The RedNet MP8R features eight high-quality remote-controlled mic preamps developed specifically for the RedNet range, backed by over thirty years of mic preamp development that began in service to George Martin’s Air Studios, and brought into the modern age under the expertise and uncompromising eye of Focusrite’s Phil Dudderidge.

Focusrite RedNet MP8R in one take:

  • Eight Focusrite remote-controlled preamps with enhanced input level capability, and dual input impedance to deliver maximum performance when one mic feeds single or multiple pres
  • Two outputs from each preamp: one direct and the other automatically gain-compensated to deliver a constant level
  • Precision low-latency conversion at up to 24-bit/192kHz, with best-in-class dynamic range and overall audio quality
  • Built-in redundancy with dual power and network connections
  • Operate locally, or remotely via RedNet Control software, Pro Tools, MIDI or OCA (Open Control Architecture – available 2015 via firmware update)

INSIDE THE BOX—Focusrite RedNet MP8R

Maintaining the transparency and ultra low noise that RedNet preamplifiers are known for, the MP8R mic pres deliver a real-world frequency response flat from 20Hz to 40kHz ±0.1dB and an astonishingly low THD+N of 0.0012%. Controllable from the front panel or via RedNet Control software, the preamps found in the MP8R add a level of versatility not found in other multi-channel preamps. Each of the MP8R’s preamps has dual input impedance of 10k or 2.4k ohm, to deliver maximum performance when one mic feeds single or multiple mic pres in parallel. Standard features include switchable 6dB/12dB high-pass filter at 65Hz, +48V individual phantom power, phase reverse, and -20dB pad.

Two outputs from each preamp with gain compensation

The RedNet MP8R is able to provide two outputs from each mic channel: one direct and a second automatically gain-compensated to deliver a constant level. This arrangement allows an FOH engineer, for example, to control analog mic gain without affecting the signal level being received by a monitor-mix, or broadcast engineer on the network. The preamp’s output is fed to the converters, which split the signal into two streams, one passing unaffected to the Dante network, the other passing through a DSP amplifier that automatically compensates for any changes made to the analog audio level. The output of the mic amp module feeds the A-D converter. Once in the digital domain, the signal is split into two streams. The first stream passes through unaffected to the corresponding Dante transmitter. The second stream passes through a DSP amplifier which automatically compensates for any changes made to the analogue audio level. In case the gain-compensated channel is pushed toward clipping, the MP8R also has a headroom allowance setting for overload protection.

Power supply and Ethernet redundancy

The RedNet MP8R’s network and PSU redundancy gives live sound and broadcast engineers that much needed extra piece of mind in critical live sound environments. After all, who doesn’t appreciate one less are where things can go wrong, especially in circumstance where there are no do-overs. Dual rear-panel Ethernet connectors provide absolute network reliability with seamless switch-over to a standby network in case of the unexpected. In a studio setting, these ports can be used to daisy-chain additional units when operating in Switched mode. Redundant universal power supplies(100V-240V) also provide seamless switching capability. In the event of a power outage, one supply can be connected to an uninterruptible source. Each PSU’s status can be monitored remotely over the network or from the front panel.

Precision low-latency conversion

After decades of designing and building mastering quality converters, the RedNet MP8R features Focusrite’s best conversion to date. The secret is the RedNet’s dual-path configuration, which uses two conversion chips in parallel and sums the result, maintaining a balanced signal throughout the system. The parallel converters produces an increase in signal level of 6dB (as the two signals are in phase) while random noise is only increased by 3dB (since phase cancellation happens on average 50% of the time). The result: a net improvement of signal/noise ratio of 3dB. The MP8Rs converter design strikes a precise balance between multiple factors—including dynamic range, distortion, noise floor, and conversion latency—for the optimal overall sound. With 24-bit/192kHz sampling capability and 118dB A-D / 121dB D-A dynamic range, the MP8R is ideal for high-resolution audio. The MP8R’s A/D handles sample rates from 44.1kHz to 192kHz with pull-up and pull-down capability (-4% / -0.1% / +0.1% / +4.167% at 24-bit), Focusrite pays as much attention to the analog side of the equation as to the digital, optimizing noise levels by keeping digital and analog components well apart and using multi-layer boards with internal ground-planes.

RedNet Control software

RedNet Control 2 provides device monitoring, metering, and remote control for the MP8R and other RedNet devices. Running on Mac or Windows computers, RedNet Control features a tabbed browser-like graphic user interface and the ability to handle up to 600 RedNet devices. Available units in the system can be dragged and dropped from a searchable Device List into a grid on a tab, where they are shown graphically. Each tab can display up to 12 devices, with up to 50 defined tabs. Tabs can also be populated automatically. Devices can be grouped logically and intuitively on each page. For example, a multi-location system can include a tab representing each area of a facility. The ability to “model” rooms makes RedNet even more efficient for use in large post-productions facilities.

RedNet Control 2 key features:

  • Ideal for controlling large and multi-location systems
  • Supports up to 600 RedNet devices and up to 96 channels of RedNet mic pre on one screen
  • Completely revised tabbed browser-like user interface
  • Remote control of all RedNet devices on the network
