26 x 28, 24-bit/192kHz Thunderbolt interface with eight high-quality preamps featuring Focusrite’s AIR effect, class-leading conversion, front-panel preamp controls, 16 channels ADAT I/O, and plug-in bundle

The big sister of the 8Pre, the Focusrite Clarett 8PreX multi-channel preamp/interface is a 2U rackspace version that adds front-panel controls of the most used preamp functions, including phase reverse, +48V phantom power, and high-pass filter on every channel. Designed for studio integration, the Clarett 8PreX audio interface also features eight of Focusrite’s specially designed, ultra-transparent preamps with the legendary “Air” effect, first appearing in Focusrite’s ISA preamps designed by Mr. Rupert Neve for George Martin’s AIR Studios. In keeping with Focusrite’s core approach to audio, “sound is everything,” the Clarett 8PreX has surprisingly low noise performance which, along with its class-leading conversion, lets you layer tracks as you please while maintaining clarity and punch—and of course the extra “Air” that engineers have prized in studio recording for decades.

Focusrite Clarett 8PreX in one take:

  • 26 x 28 multi-channel preamp/Thunderbolt interface designed for studio integration

INSIDE THE BOX—Focusrite Clarett 8PreX

The Clarett 8PreX multi-channel preamp/ Thunderbolt audio interface is a 2U rackspace DAW front end designed for studio integration. Each of its eight mic input channels provide easy access via front-panel controls to the most often used functions for tracking, including high-pass filter at 80Hz with a 12dB/octave slope, +48V phantom power, and phase reverse. The Clarett 8PreX provides 26 in x 26 out simultaneous analog and digital I/O including stereo S/PDIF and 16 channels of ADAT (@ 48kHz). The 8PreX can be synchronized with other digital equipment via its word clock I/O, as either master clock source or slave to external clocking.

The Clarett 8PreX also has connectors that let you use it as a MIDI interface. Complementing its impressive preamps, the instrument DIs of the 8PreX, accessible via convenient front-panel TS jacks, are also specially designed for the Clarett range, with performance specs rivaling those of some of the world’s finest dedicated DIs. When combined with the ultra-low 1.67ms latency of the 8PreX’s interface, you can track through amp simulations and effects plug-ins in real time—even using the hottest guitar pickups without clipping.

If you need more high-quality input channels, you can add up to 16 additional channels of Clarett Air-enabled preamps by simply connecting two 8-channel Focusrite OctoPres, two 8Pre’s, or a combination of the two, via the 8PreX’s dual rear-panel ADAT optical inputs. The Clarett 8PreX also has 10 rear-panel 1/4″ outputs that can be used for additional pairs of monitors or sending to outboard effects processors.

Specially-designed mic pres with unique “Air” effect

Beyond the microphone, the most important part of your input signal chain is the preamp. Mic pres were among the very first modules that the original Focusrite company produced thirty years ago, when master console designer, Mr. Rupert Neve, was commissioned by Sir George Martin to create a new series of console channel modules for his AIR Studios. The result was the ISA preamp/channel strip, which featured Neve’s famous “Air” setting, incorporated in the Clarett range of mic pres, which deliver an impressively low noise response of –128dB EIN. Combined with its low distortion, ultra-linear design and carefully chosen components, the Clarett 8PreX offers a clean, open, and transparent sound. But that’s just where the Clarett sound begins.

What sets the Clarett preamps apart from the textbook preamps found in other budget interfaces is the classic “Air” effect found in the aforementioned ISA modules. The Air setting on the Clarett mic preamp switches the impedance of the preamp to that of the original Neve-designed ISA module, producing the “transformer resonance effect,” which gives your recordings the air and clarity of an ISA transformer-based mic pre. “Air” can add some sprinkles to any vanilla-sounding microphone, but truly shines with the vintage mics that this input impedance was originally intended. There are some extra little touches to the Clarett mic pre, too, such as a special gain curve for the input level controls so they work musically the way our ear does, rather offering the conventional linear gain approach.

Precision 24-bit/192kHz conversion

Designing converters isn’t just about picking a name-brand chip, it also encompasses careful circuit design and physical layout. Multi-layer boards provide internal ground-planes to reduce noise, while keeping analog and digital elements of the circuit separate will reduce the likelihood of digital clocking spikes and other noise getting into sensitive analog components. Of course component quality and selection are important considerations as well, and Focusrite does not skimp there. Clarett’s 192kHz/24-bit converters deliver up to 118dB (A/D) / 119dB (D/A) real-world dynamic range, letting you capture every nuance and subtlety in your music, whether you’re recording or mixing.

Software mixer and included plug-ins

Focusrite Control is a user-friendly, fully assignable 30-in/16-out hardware workflow-based software mixer that lets you configure the Clarett 8PreX with signal routing used in the most common recording tasks. For more complex situations, it provides extensive routing and monitoring options, as well as the ability to control global hardware settings such as sample rate and synchronization. Also included with the Clarett 8PreX is an impressive sounding plug-in collection comprising Softube’s world-class Time and Tone Bundle, which includes TSAR-1R Reverb, Tube Delay, Saturation Knob, and Drawmer S73 Intelligent Master Processor. Of course, it wouldn’t make sense to leave out the legacy sound of Focusrite, which is why Clarett software also includes the Red 2 and Red 3 Plug-in Suite, which accurately model Focusrite’s classic Red range equalizer and compressor hardware, used on countless hit songs.

Note: The Addictive Keys virtual instrument from XLN Audio is included for free with all Focusrite audio interfaces. One full license per account is available for existing customers as well as new customers.

OUTSIDE THE BOX—Focusrite Clarett 8PreX

The front panel of the Clarett 8PreX has individual rotary gain controls for each channel, plus high-pass filter, phantom power, phase reverse switches and corresponding LED indicators. Each channel also has mic, line, and Air LED indicators (set from control software). The front-panel metering display has ten 6-segment LED bargraph meters indicating signal levels (8 in, two out), along with LED indicators for clock sync lock; analog, S/PDIF, and ADAT 1 & 2 source indicators; MIDI receive indicator, and Thunderbolt active LED. The display section also has two 1/4″ TRS headphone jacks each with independent volume control, and a main monitor level control along with Dim (-18dB level reduction) and Mute switches that control monitor outputs.

The Clarett 8PreX’s rear panel has eight XLR mic inputs, eight 1/4″ line inputs, 10 x 1/4″ line outputs; dual ADAT optical I/O that provides an additional 16 bidirectional channels of 24-bit/48kHz digital audio; Thunderbolt port; BNC Word Clock input and output; standard 5-pin MIDI in and out ports; power switch; stereo S/PDIF I/O via RCA connectors; and IEC power connector.
