Description

The Amphion One12 is a compact, passive 2-way studio monitor with a proprietary waveguide and passive radiator that provide a controlled low end and pure, natural sound with a sweet spot for days

The Amphion One12 is a desktop-size, two-way passive monitor with a 1″ titanium tweeter and 4-1/2″ mid/woofer, which puts out a sound far bigger and spacious than its size would suggest. With a design philosophy that emphasizes accuracy and detail, the Amphion studio monitors, including the One12, endeavor to provide reproduction that is as true to the source as possible. One of the unique features of the One12 is its passive radiator design, which provides a very solid and controlled bass response. The One12 lets you listen at lower levels, without changing the internal balance of the instruments, thus reducing ear fatigue. It gives you the flat response you need for mixes that translate, plus an enjoyable listening experience that lets you mix all day and into the night. If you’re a globe-trotting engineer who prefers to monitor with familiar speakers, or looking to build a commercially viable, laptop-based studio, the Amphion One12 is for you.

Amphion One12 passive studio monitor in one take:

  •  Passive radiator for controlled low-frequency response
  • Low crossover frequency and high-precision driver integration
  • Controlled dispersion
  • Handmade in Finland

  Passive radiator design

A preferred method for enhancing low frequencies to increase bass response in small cabinet is the passive radiator. The radiator is a diaphragm used to reduce port turbulence, which can interfere with the direct sound of the drivers. The Amphion One12 employs a passive radiator mounted on the rear of a sealed cabinet. The radiator vibrates in sympathy with the low-frequency driver, which maintains the same low-frequency response regardless of volume—hence the One12 providing exceptional tonal balance and sound stage at lower and more comfortable listening levels.

Low crossover frequency and high-precision driver integration

In order to make proper assessments and mix accordingly, monitors, to paraphrase Quincy Jones, should tell the truth. In essence, you have to be able to hear what you recorded. As such, harsh tone, distortion, phase problems, uneven directivity, and unnecessarily high listening volume not only color the sound, but cause ear fatigue, which can often be related to lack of resolution and balance. Amphion’s low crossover frequency and high precision driver integration interact seamlessly to provide accurate phase response and a realistic sound stage. Perhaps the most important feature of Amphion monitors is their uncanny ability to reproduce sound without adding any sound of their own—the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

Controlled dispersion for phase coherency

One of the problems plaguing two-way speaker design is phase coherency and linearity across the audible spectrum. The difficulties arise from combining the physical properties of the various drivers into a unified system. To accomplish this, Amphion’s proprietary waveguide provides an elegant solution by seamlessly coupling the tweeter and woofer. This superior integration over a broad frequency range reduces the need for electrical time correction, which leads to a pure, natural sound. To achieve this controlled dispersion, Amphion chose high-density, non-porous Corian® . Created to last a lifetime, Corian is a highly reflective material with a stone-hard surface that can be seamlessly crafted to accommodate any design or dimension.

Handmade in Finland

Amphion comprises a small, dedicated team of highly skilled craftsmen and technicians who are passionate about music and sound. All Amphion monitors and amplifiers are meticulously hand-built to impeccable standards, with high specs and tolerances. The result is a range of high-end monitors that enable audio professionals to focus on the mix, not the sound of the speaker.

Who’s using Amphion?

Among the growing list of mixers, engineers, sound editors, and composers taken with the Amphion sound, are pro audio luminaries such as Dave Pensado, Jacquire King, multiple Grammy winner Dave Reitzas, BAFTA award-winning composer, Jasper Kyd, and the legendary Bruce Swedien, engineer and mixer of the world’s best-selling album, Michael Jackson’s Thriller (which, by the way, was recorded right here at our very own Westlake Studios).
