The ADAM S7A MK2 main monitor is designed for large control rooms and film post-production facilities where it is essential to not only duplicate the experience of being in a theater during the mix process, but also to impress clients with a dramatic final product (which is why industry insiders call mains “the party speakers”). And for those who subscribe to the Ken Scott school of mixing—mixing loud on mains is the only way to go—the S7A MK2 gives you all of the accuracy and detail you’ve come to expect from ADAM’s high-end near- and midfield monitors, and does so at much higher volume levels (up to 138dB SPL!). Looking at the front panel of the four-way S7A MK2, you can see there’s a party going on with dual 15″ woofers, dual 9″ mid-woofers, dual mid drivers, and famed X-ART folded ribbon tweeter, mounted in what ADAM calls an “extended D’Appolito” configuration (see below), which results in ultra accurate, full bass and a linear response across its remarkable 20Hz-50kHZ frequency range. Extended D’Appolito speaker configuration

With multi-speaker configurations, a number of problems across the frequency range can occur, such as overloading in the bass, as well as radiation patterns combining to form lobes at the crossover points. The effect, known as lobe tilting, which commonly occurs with typical mid-tweeter configurations, can compromise the tonality of the recorded program material. To overcome lobe tilting without using time alignment, Joseph D’Appolito created the mid-tweeter-mid (MTM) configuration.

The S7A MK2 has seven speakers arrayed so that gradual transitions could be made across the frequency spectrum. ADAM engineers chose a horizontal symmetry that can be described as an extended D’Appolito configuration. This design, combined with appropriate transition frequencies and filter slopes, results in radiation patterns with consistent reproduction characteristics horizontally in the center position. Concurrently, vertical dispersion is reduced minimizing reflections from the ceiling, floor, or mixing. These reduced early reflections have less chance to interfere with direct signal, which leads to significantly better stereo imaging and three-dimensional sound.

 Impulse coupling

With speaker mounting, as with all things, the laws of physics come into play, and not always in a fun way. Impulse, in physics, is a function of force over time. Forces created by the movement of the diaphragm/voice coil assemblies are transferred to the cabinet. Since wood is not particularly stiff and vibrates in sympathy to low frequencies, these forces keep the driver’s basket in motion relative to the diaphragm, which in turn compromise sound quality.

The phenomenon is like the difference between trying to jump in the air while standing in sand as opposed to standing on rock, which according to Newton’s third law, offers an equal upward force to the downward force of your legs.

Impulse Coupling provides a rock-solid bass for the movement of the driver. In the S7A Mk2, all drivers are mounted on an acoustically dead, ultra-stiff 1″ thick (25mm) aluminum honeycomb plate that provides an extremely stable bridge to the cabinet. Since drivers are fixed, their time behavior (and consequently their clarity) is audibly and measurably improved.

Six onboard pulse-width modulation amplifiers

Remarkably 90% efficient, Class D amps, also known as PWM (Pulse Width Modulation), minimize energy waste, are lighter in weight, and far more robust with a longer working life than traditional Class A/B amplifiers. PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) amplifier technology had significantly improved such that only a fifth of the generated heat has to be dissipated—a major breakthrough in terms of reliability and durability. This allows the S7A Mk2 to be flush-mounted into studio walls, since all the heat is emitted through the front of the cabinet, while the heat sink temperatures remain moderate. Combined with built-in protection circuits, the constant low temperatures of these amplifiers result in reliable performance not possible with traditional AB amplifiers.

Room-compensation control panel

In addition to an input sensitivity control with a range of ±10dB, there are four other level controls for the individual amplifier modules. Shelving filters at both ends of the frequency spectrum and three fully parametric equalizers help compensate for standing waves. The EQs can be inserted separately or grouped so their effect can be directly evaluated.

In large film-score mixing rooms, often the need arises to simulate theater sound. Dolby® X-Curve, based on the ISO 2969 standard, has been implemented for this purpose. X-Curve is a filter that engages a 3dB per-octave roll-off starting at 2kHz. A selector switch below the front input jack activates this filter, eliminating the need for external processing during a film mix. In addition to the rear input there is an additional switchable XLR input on the front panel, allowing work with the monitor regardless of set-up.
