ADAM Audio A3X
Nearfield Monitor 2-way 4.5″ Woofer
The ADAM A3X is a budget-friendly monitor with a 4.5″ woofer, ADAM’s proprietary folded ribbon tweeter, and stereolink for single-knob volume knob control of both speakers
The ADAM A3X is a small, self-powered desktop monitor for the space-challenged or mobile studio on a budget, looking for quality monitoring. Despite its small size and affordability, the A3X meets professional standards in accurate sound reproduction, particularly in the all-too critical 200-400Hz range, where mud and boxiness lives. The ADAM A3X also provides a three-dimensional soundfield, defined instrument spatialization, and a bass response that’s controlled and deeper than one would expect from a monitor of its size. What sets the A3X apart from other monitors is ADAM’s precision X-ART ribbon tweeter, which not only produces excellent transient response and ultra-wide bandwidth up to 50kHz, but also does so in a very musical way that’s easy on the ears—a major bonus for long mixing sessions.
ADAM A3X monitor in one take:
- German handmade precision X-ART tweeter
- 5″ woofer (carbon fiber)
- Amp power RMS / Music: 50W / 80W
- Stereolink volume control
- Frequency Response: 60Hz – 50kHz
- SPL per pair at 1 m: ≥106dB
Precision X-ART tweeter
The X-ART tweeter comprises a corrugated ribbon diaphragm, in which the folds compress or expand according to the audio signal applied to them. By folding the X-ART diaphragm a larger foil can be used, increasing the acoustically effective area of the diaphragm by a factor of more than 2.5 times over conventional dome tweeters. This results in higher dynamic output with extremely wide dispersion. With the increased surface area, the X-ART tweeter shows an improvement in air loading by a factor of 4 over conventional transducers, providing 4dB higher efficiency and reproducing frequencies accurately all the way to 50kHz. The linear response to 50kHz reduces in-band phase shift, which has a profound effect in the audible spectrum: less coloration, more realistic space and depth, and better perceived dynamic realism,
In addition, the X-ART tweeter’s folded membrane avoids the typical breakup/distortion and subsequent dynamic limiting at higher frequencies found in dome and cone tweeters. Another positive result of the X-ART design is that the driving ”stripes” are in direct contact with the outer air and are cooled immediately.
Since the X-ART tweeter has an extended frequency range, it presents problems with the use of pulse-width modulation amplifiers, which are known for their efficiency. However, PWM amplifiers require a low-pass filter to separate the modulation frequency from the audio band, which in turn could limit the high-frequency reproduction capabilities of the X-ART tweeter.
ADAM engineers put considerable time and effort into creating a high-frequency power amp to allow the X-ART tweeter perform up to its abilities. The result was an ultra-low distortion power amp module that delivers an ultra wide response up to 300 kHz. With nothing limiting the X-ART tweeter, the monitor has unsurpassed clarity and openness which will satisfy the most experienced professional ear.
The Stereolink (A3X and A5X only) is a useful feature for desktop DAWs, which comprises two additional input and output jacks for the second stereo channel. This allows you to control the volume for both monitors using the volume control of one. The volume control of the slave monitor only affects its own volume to easily compensate for differences in listening distance. Unlike the typical master-slave configuration, each monitor can function either as a master or a slave.
Front- and rear-panel controls
The front panel of the A3X includes an on-off switch and volume control. The rear-panel inputs include an unbalanced RCA input as well as RCA stereo link input and output, and balanced XLR input for professional use.
The ADAM A3X is a great solution for desktop or laptop DAWs in small studios, or mobile recording rigs. To order yours, call or chat online with your Westlake Pro Sales Consultant today.
